Annotation

Purpose: to identify the consequences of using wastewater for irrigation based on a retrospective analysis of research data obtained on the soils of our country. 

Discussion. The analysis of the Soviet and Russian experience of using wastewater from municipal treatment facilities for irrigation is presented. The fields allocated for their use were generally called “irrigation fields”. Many observations were long-term. The data on the results of wastewater irrigation in the cities of Kharkov, Odessa, Volzhsky, Aleysk, Novocherkassk, as well as the Republic of Crimea and the Saratov Region are given. The data obtained indicated a beneficial effect of treated wastewater on crop yields; an increase in soil organic matter was noted. At the same time, an increase in the content of easily soluble salts in the arable layer of soils and especially, in heavy loamy soils was observed. An increase in the sodium content in the soil-absorbing complex was recorded, which may further create a danger of alkalization under unfavorable conditions. Using the example of experiments with wastewater from municipal treatment facilities in Novocherkassk, the need to update previously conducted studies in connection with significant changes in the qualitative composition of domestic wastewater is shown. 

Conclusions. Analysis of the available research data carried out in different time periods helped to identify the main critical soil parameters that change when irrigated with domestic wastewater. Changes in the composition of wastewater from municipal treatment facilities (which is associated with both changes in the socio-economic structure of cities and with technical and technological parameters of treatment facilities) indicate the need for periodic updating of studies on their suitability for irrigation.
