Purpose: to study the differences in the growth and development of the first-year sugar beet hybrids irrigated with drip irrigation systems in Rostov region.

Materials and methods. The studies were conducted in the Azov natural and agricultural zone of Rostov region. The soils of the experimental plot were ordinary medium-deep light loamy chernozem with a humus content in the arable layer of 3.8 %. The soil nitrogen content was 50–65 mg/kg, mobile phosphorus – 32–40 mg/kg, exchangeable potassium – 320–380 mg/kg. The reaction of the soil solution was slightly alkaline. The sugar beet hybrids Visit, Vector, Prestige were selected for the experiment. The soil cultivation system and the calculated fertilizer rate were applied according to the established zonal farming system of the Rostov region.

Results. The sugar beet growth and development indicator measurements were conducted on the tested hybrids in different phenological phases of the crop. The root and leaf weights, as well as the root and total plant length in the last phases of development, were measured in all the studied periods of crop vegetation. The measurements obtained in the studied phenological phases in the studied hybrids differed to varying degrees depending on the phase and hybrid. Almost all the measurement indices were best in the Visit hybrid, and the worst in the Vector hybrid.

Conclusions. The conducted studies determine that the Visit hybrid turned out to be the most developed in terms of its morphological features in the first year of life under experimental conditions. Analysis of the results showed that among the three studied hybrids, its indices were the best in almost all phenological phases. The indices of the Prestige hybrid were slightly inferior to similar indices of the Visit hybrid, and the worst indices were noted in the Vector hybrid.
