Purpose: to develop and substantiate a calibration dependence of water discharge on the gate opening angle of the head regulating structure of the Afipskaya irrigation system (Republic of Adygea) to ensure accurate and cost-effective water metering.

Materials and methods. In April 2025, field hydrometric measurements were performed at the facility using an acoustic profilograph at three head pressure levels in the upper pool (50, 150, and 250 cm) and step values of the screen lift (from 10 to 60 cm). Measurements were carried out at a hydrometric cross-section located 300 m downstream of the headworks. The office analysis included constructing linear regression relationships between flow rate and gate opening for each head level, as well as extrapolating the resulting relationships beyond the experimental ranges – up to 100 cm for gate opening and up to 350 cm for upstream water levels.

Results. The maximum measured error did not exceed 5 %, which meets the requirements of GOST R 71113-2023. Linear functional relationships between water discharge and hydraulic parameters which were used to develop a calibration table covering gate opening ranges of 5–100 cm and upstream water levels of 50–350 cm were determined.

Conclusions. The proposed approach enables reliable forecasting of water discharge based on water level and gate position readings without the need for additional real-time measurements. The obtained results confirm the feasibility of implementing accurate and cost-effective water metering in irrigation systems and can be recommended for use at similar facilities in the Russian Federation.
