Purpose: to develop and test a methodology for applying a hydrodynamic model to assess changes in canal hydraulic parameters following reconstruction aimed at increasing its capacity and operational reliability.

Materials and methods. A one-dimensional hydrodynamic model with ten cross-sections was constructed for an 11.4 km long picket of the Proletarsky Canal. Two scenarios are compared: with actual (before reconstruction) and design (after reconstruction) morphometric characteristics. The boundary conditions are determined by the flow rate dynamics at the initial picket and the water level at the final picket. The analysis included comparison of longitudinal profiles and construction of the “level – discharge area”, “level – hydraulic radius”, “level – flow rate” relationships, as well as flow charts of water levels, velocities, flows and volumes in characteristic sections (PK 2635 and PK 5135).

Results and discussion. The reconstruction resulted in an increase in the discharge area (by 33 % at a level of 25 m), an increase in the hydraulic radius (by 80 % at a level of 23 m, by 32 % at a level of 26 m), and an increase in the discharge (by 50 % at a level of 24 m, by 20 % at a level of 26 m). The water level dropped by 0.1–0.2 m, the flow velocity decreased by 0.1–0.15 m/s, and water volumes became larger and more stable. This indicates a transition to a more efficient, controllable, and safe hydraulic regime without the risk of erosion and flooding.

Conclusions. The reconstruction with the formation of a trapezoidal cross-section increased significantly the canal hydraulic efficiency. The developed methodology, based on hydrodynamic modeling, allows for an objective assessment of the consequences of reconstruction and can be recommended for widespread use in modernizing irrigation systems in arid regions of Russia.
