Purpose: to determine the feasibility of computer simulation of the air-water regime of soils in the unsaturated zone and the groundwater level (GWL) dynamics in the interdrain space of complex irrigation systems.

Materials and methods. The simulation model to investigate filtration processes and the air-water regime dynamics of soils in complex irrigation systems in the saturated and unsaturated zones of the Northwest Russia was used. A three-dimensional finite element model of mass transfer in porous media, FEMWATER taking into account the specific features of the study area was applied. The initial calibration data were the result of experiments aimed at studying the GWL dynamics in the subsurface wetting-drainage regime, conducted at the Shipovsky pilot site, Kaliningrad Region.

Results. A good correlation (rxy > 0.75) between the experimental and calculated results was obtained during the analyses. The Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE = 0.80) is considered high. This study demonstrated the feasibility of successful computer simulation of groundwater level (GWL) dynamics and soil moisture pressure in the aeration zone of complex irrigation systems.

Conclusions. Simulation modeling using the FEMWATER finite element model of mass transfer in porous media, with sufficient experimental support, can significantly improve the effectiveness of air-water regime studies in combined reclamation systems for the development of management recommendations under various weather conditions, including in real time. This study can serve as a basis for further research in the field of land reclamation and sustainable water resources management.
