Purpose: to develop a technology and technical solutions for drainage and wastewater treatment of a rice irrigation system for its recycling in irrigation.

Materials and methods. The initial data are the results of a chemical analysis of the irrigation and drainage and wastewater from the rice irrigation system. The Frolov-Rodziller method was used to calculate the average concentrations of substances obtained by mixing the waters.

Results and discussion. The average concentrations of substances were calculated upon dilution of drainage and wastewater from the discharge collector with irrigation water from the canal; these concentrations do not correspond to the maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) for water bodies of fishery importance. It was found that the average concentrations of phosphates, manganese, copper, and sulfates after dilution exceed the MPC, indicating the absence of their neutralization effect. Since phosphates have a fertilizing effect, the developed drainage and wastewater treatment technology is aimed at removing manganese, copper, and sulfates from drainage and wastewater. The technology involves water treatment in sequentially arranged modules of coagulation, simplified aeration, sedimentation, and filtration. The developed technical solution is a lined open channel containing modules for treating drainage and wastewater from a rice irrigation system.

Conclusions. A technology and technical solution have been developed that ensures that drainage and wastewater from a rice irrigation system is treated to a quality that meets irrigation water standards and the MPC standard, enabling the reuse of water in irrigation reclamation, which is consistent with the principle of ecosystem water management. The ecosystem-based water management principle in rice irrigation systems aims to purify drainage and wastewater from rice paddies and enable the reuse of purified water for irrigation.
